The Rwenzori mountains, often referred to as the legendary Mountains of the Moon, have been drastically affected by climate change, leading to significant glacier erosion. By 2024, only Stanley's glacier remains intact. An expedition led by Project Pressure, in partnership with UNESCO and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, aims to assess the glaciers' conditions and aid local communities, like the Bakonzo, who view the ice as sacred. The expedition not only seeks to create 3D models but also emphasizes sustainable environmental practices rooted in the deep cultural connections of the Bakonzo people.
The Rwenzori mountains, long considered the legendary Mountains of the Moon, face severe erosion and climate changes impacting the glaciers secure to local communities.
Led by Project Pressure and UNESCO, the expedition to Mount Stanley aims to document the remaining ice while empowering the local Bakonzo people to monitor environmental changes.
