"A slice of the bluff along West Cliff Drive dropped into the sea in recent days as a massive tidal surge and winter storm pounded the coastline. Santa Cruz spokesperson Ashley Hussey said city staff responded on Saturday to reports that a small section of the coastal cliff across from Getchell Street near Natural Bridges State Beach had crumbled away as another round of king tides washed over the region."
"No injuries were reported, but because the erosion occurred only feet from a paved pathway frequented by local bicyclists and joggers, the city set up barricades and caution tape to prevent curious onlookers from getting too close to the unstable area while city staff continued to monitor conditions. A full closure of the path is not planned at this time. Pedestrian access will continue to be monitored and adjusted if conditions change, Hussey wrote in statement."
"National Weather Service meteorologist Dalton Behringer said the coastal sheering unfolded Friday as ocean waters rose to exceptionally high levels and peaked only a few hours later. According to Behringer, a sea level monitor in Monterey registered a height 2.43 feet above normal Saturday morning, which is the highest measurement since 2022 and the third highest on record in that area."
A slice of the bluff along West Cliff Drive collapsed into the sea during a massive tidal surge and winter storm. The failure occurred across from Getchell Street near Natural Bridges State Beach, only feet from a paved pathway used by bicyclists and joggers. Barricades and caution tape were installed to block access; a full path closure is not planned, but pedestrian access will be monitored and adjusted if conditions change. Preliminary evaluation links the failure to coastal erosion; the area remains vulnerable and will receive additional analysis to determine possible safety measures.
