"The announce-and-defend method of developing federal Indian policy is an inappropriate, paternalistic, unjustified, and historically inefficient method of decision-making."
"Eliminating previous standards ignores federal trust and treaty responsibilities, impinges on roles and sovereignty of Tribal Nations, and flouts longstanding policy."
The Velvet-Wood uranium mine in San Juan County, Utah, is the first project approved under a new expedited emergency process for environmental reviews. This process allows reviews to be completed in just 14 days, significantly shorter than the previous timeline. Tribal governments had only seven days to provide feedback, and the public comment period was eliminated. Concerns about water contamination and the expedited process were raised by six tribal nations, but no changes were made. The Trump administration's changes to NEPA reviews were made without tribal consultation.
