Puerto Rico has faced a persistent energy crisis, with high electricity costs and regular outages. However, in 2023, the town of Adjuntas launched its first community-owned solar microgrid, which includes five microgrids providing 228 kilowatts of energy capacity. This initiative is part of Casa Pueblo's efforts to foster energy independence and resilience in the community. The project has attracted global interest, hosting researchers and students eager to learn about its success in maintaining power during widespread blackouts. Additionally, the town aims to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.
During recent blackouts that left the entire Puerto Rican archipelago in darkness, Adjuntas remained alight, thanks to the microgrid.
Casa Pueblo regularly hosts researchers and students who come from around the globe to learn about the town's community-based energy-resilience project.
