Social support is a vital cushion to mitigate the impact of traumatic events. Social support is associated with lower levels of post-traumatic stress disorder and typically contributes to faster and more robust recovery after exposure to trauma (Evans, 2012). We can do much as a society to mitigate the loss of life, and perhaps there is also more we can do to improve social support in the wake of natural disasters.

Canada's worst school shooting happened on February 12 in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, a small western community of 2,000. Eight are dead. A community is in mourning. A nation paused to remember those killed, as a few days later, leaders of the five major political parties in Canada all came together to offer their collective support to the community. They, like the entire population of Tumbler Ridge, and many others across Canada, were bystanders to a senseless act of violence.
The air feels heavier. And the struggles are changing shape. Beyond my office walls, the world is shifting, and my clients sense the tremors. The things they once trusted, global order, democratic norms, and even their own personal safety, no longer feel solid. They feel brittle, as if one strong wind could bring it all down. And what they're sensing isn't imagined.
