In response to President Trump's increased tariffs on aluminum and steel, European leaders are preparing to retaliate while hoping for a negotiated solution with the U.S. EU officials contend that the trade tensions could harm both economies, emphasizing their interdependence. Ursula von der Leyen and Maros Sefcovic highlighted the importance of a firm European response to unjust tariffs. Although specific countermeasures are being assessed, the timeline for implementation remains uncertain, signifying potential escalation in transatlantic trade relations which have been previously stabilized under Biden's agreement.
"Unjustified tariffs on the E.U. will not go unanswered; they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures," said Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.
"The new U.S. tariffs are a lose-lose scenario. We are currently assessing the scope of the measures announced and will respond firmly," said Maros Sefcovic.
"We are not in a position yet to say exactly when we will be responding, very concretely," stated Paula Pinho, the E.U.'s chief spokesperson.
Former President Joe Biden’s agreement allowing specific amounts of steel and aluminum to enter the U.S. tariff-free was extended in 2023.
