Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stressed the importance of a thoughtful response to the intensifying tariff conflict between the EU and the US, calling for transatlantic unity. President Trump has introduced significant tariffs on various goods, including a substantial 25% on car imports and a 200% duty on European alcoholic beverages. Amid growing geopolitical concerns, particularly relating to defense and security, Meloni asserted Italy's strong allyship with the US while advocating for nuanced discussions rather than impulsive decisions regarding tariffs, highlighting Italy's substantial economic reliance on American markets.
Meloni stated, "Of course there are differences on the table on tariffs, but precisely for this reason I also think that we should not act on impulse but in a reasoned way."
Emanuele Orsini remarked that a trade war would be a huge problem for Italy, hoping the EU could negotiate a solution to avoid escalating tensions.
