The European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, indicated a possible reassessment of border management funding in the next EU budget. Responding to calls from the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, Brunner emphasized that any financial support for border barriers would be approached holistically, considering fundamental rights. The ECR believes funding for external barriers is essential for addressing illegal migration and security threats, especially in light of hybrid challenges posed by Russia and Belarus against various member states.
"Following the trends observed in the last years, it is clear that the overall needs for border management must be reassessed as part of the preparation also of the next multiannual financial framework."
"The funding of border fences is in our common interest, especially when we talk about the defence questions, the fighting against illegal migration, human trafficking and terrorist threats."
