Alex Burghart, Conservative shadow minister, has dismissed any potential electoral pact with Reform UK, emphasizing their aim to 'destroy' the Conservatives. During a BBC interview, he reiterated that forming an alliance with a party that poses a threat to their existence is unfeasible. Despite Burghart's stance, some Conservative figures openly support a pact, reflecting division within the party. The growing popularity of Reform UK, shown by recent opinion polls, raises concerns about potential vote splitting in upcoming elections as they outperform the Conservatives and Labour.
Burghart stated, "Reform's stated ambition is to destroy the Conservative Party. That's a pretty difficult first date. If somebody says they're out to destroy you, do you start thinking about marriage?"
Burghart said, "Whilst Reform is talking about completely killing us, I don’t think there’s a conversation to be had here."
A Reform UK spokesperson declared, "There are no circumstances in which the party would do a pact with the Conservatives."
Polls show Reform UK recently topped a YouGov opinion poll for the first time, edging in front of Labour and the Tories.
