In a recent episode of The Rich Roll Podcast, performance coach Steve Magness argued that running a mile is a simple yet effective alternative to gauging longevity through VO2 max measurements. He emphasizes that numerous studies linking VO2 max levels to lifespan often fail to accurately measure the metric, recommending a straightforward approach: run a mile and gauge your speed. This insight challenges the reliance on advanced metrics and gadgets, suggesting that fundamental physical performance can provide essential clues about an individual's long-term health prospects.
If you look at all the research that does tie VO2 max to longevity, almost all of it does not measure VO2 max. I like to simplify things.
You don't need to go to a lab to understand your VO2 max to see if you're going to live longer... All you need to do is go down to the track and go run a mile.
