Inflation rate picks up as the cost of motoring and the price of a pint rise

Inflation in January reached 1.9%, an increase from 1.4% in December, primarily due to higher transport costs and prices in hotels and restaurants. Motor insurance saw a significant rise of 11.2%, marking 17 consecutive months of increasing premiums. The CSO indicated that food prices rose as well, with notable increases in dairy products and staple foods. Despite recent easements from a high of 9%, consumers continue to face elevated prices across various sectors, indicating ongoing inflationary pressures.
