Why fuel prices in Germany are on course to rise significantly
Briefly

Germany's motoring association, ADAC, forecasts rising fuel costs due to increased CO2 tax in the coming years. The tax, already raised from 45 to 55 per tonne on January 1, 2023, added approximately three cents to a litre of fuel. Experts predict further increases, estimating up to 3.1 cents more for diesel and 19 cents for petrol by 2027. The tax aims to support Germany's climate-neutral target by 2045. A transition to a European emissions trading system for CO2 is planned to possibly stabilize pricing.
"We are assuming a maximum price increase of 3 cents for petrol and 3.1 cents for diesel in 2026," ADAC President Christian Reinicke said.
"To achieve this, emissions of climate-damaging CO2 have to be significantly reduced, and that's where the tax comes in," indicating the necessity of the CO2 tax reform.
