Strange Scaffold, led by Xalavier Nelson Jr., has garnered consistent success with its games, ensuring positive reception on Steam. Key to this success is their focus on efficiency, creating games within budget and on time. Nelson emphasizes the importance of precise game length, delivering titles that fit the right scope to meet players' expectations. Even with limited resources—like not affording GDC tickets—Nelson's philosophy is to work within constraints to boost creativity and deliver quality experiences, exemplified by their TMNT game, produced for under $300,000 in 18 months.
"I feel like it's more crucial than ever to make games efficiently and quickly, because as we can see from where the rest of the industry is at, you almost can't afford to do otherwise," Nelson told me as we sat together on a bench by the Yerba Buena Gardens, a park close to the convention center.
Strange Scaffold has become known not only for making critically acclaimed games, but also for those games being short - or, perhaps more accurately, precisely the right length and scope.
