After Abortion Bans, Infant Mortality and Births Increased, Research Finds
Briefly

New research published in JAMA indicates that infant mortality rates rose significantly in states that enacted abortion bans following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The studies highlighted an overall increase of 6% in infant mortality across states with such bans, with a noted rise of 11% among non-Hispanic Black infants. The adverse outcomes were attributed predominantly to socio-economic challenges faced by those bearing children in these states. Furthermore, the data revealed a concerning rise in congenital birth defects, emphasizing the dire consequences of restricting abortion access for vulnerable populations.
Overall, infant mortality was 6 percent higher than expected in states that implemented abortion bans, reflecting increases in nine states, decreases in four and no change in one.
Among non-Hispanic Black infants, mortality was 11 percent higher after abortion bans were implemented than would have been expected, highlighting disparities exacerbated by these bans.
