Utah's higher education system is facing budget cuts as House Speaker Mike Schultz warns of potential 10% reductions in funding by 2025, aiming to adapt to demographic changes.
Schultz believes that rising administrative costs in higher education need scrutiny, stating, "We work really hard as a state to hold our state agencies accountable and to make them run efficiently, but nobody's ever looked at higher ed."
The need for deeper budget cuts is also fueled by a predicted demographic cliff that will cause enrollment to slow and eventually contract, with Schultz emphasizing, "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to [see] there's this cliff coming and we've got to get ahead of it."
Schultz suggested that savings from budget cuts could be directed towards expanding research at state universities and enhancing workforce development, indicating a shift in how institutions should operate.
