A beautiful landscape painting by Abel Grimmer, titled 'Landscape with Peasants Near a Lakeside Castle,' has been rediscovered after being in a private collection since 1935. Auctioneers Woolley and Wallis, through careful appraisal and research, confirmed its authenticity, noting the rarity of genuine works by Grimmer. The painting's original owners had no idea of its significance until they sought expertise from Victor Fauvelle at an auction house. This painting connects back to the influence of Grimmer's father, Jacob Grimmer, and the great landscape tradition of the Flemish late Renaissance, marking an important rediscovery in art history.
On first look at the photos, the composition seemed to be very typical of Abel Grimmer, but we were not hopeful that it was genuine, as works by him are very rare.
To delight of the department, the picture in question was described in detail in the catalogue raisonne and fitted the description perfectly.
Genuine works by Abel Grimmer are rare and often turn out to be copies. The paint surface showed the unmistakable luminescence of this great period of Flemish late Renaissance painting.
Jacob Grimmer, Abel's father, was known for making inexpensive copies of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his son was also strongly influenced by Bruegel.
