The recent firing of Jonathan Kamens, the security lead for the VA website, by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has raised serious concerns regarding the safety and privacy of sensitive data held on VA.gov. This site serves over 20 million veterans by providing access to essential benefits and personal information. Insiders warn that Kamens' abrupt exit compromises the cybersecurity standards critical for protecting veterans' private data, indicating that the agency’s digital services risk falling behind on necessary protocols.
"I believe that his abrupt firing puts the security of veterans services at risk," one source with knowledge of VA systems, who was granted anonymity because they fear retaliation, told WIRED about Kamens.
"It's inevitable that the cybersecurity practice within VA.gov is going to suffer and that they are going to fall behind on what they are required to do in order to keep cybersecurity on VA.gov where it needs to be," Kamens says.
