Salt Typhoon hackers possibly targeted telecom research at US universities
Briefly

A Chinese cyberespionage unit, known as Salt Typhoon, allegedly targeted several U.S. universities in pursuit of research in telecommunications. The unit accessed devices at institutions such as UCLA and California State University, compromising over 1,000 Cisco appliances, particularly those linked to telecom firms. With over half of the targeted devices located in the U.S. and other countries, the threat emphasizes educational institutions' vulnerability to state-sponsored attacks aimed at acquiring intellectual property and research data, an increasing concern for cybersecurity and academic integrity.
The protection of the personal information and proprietary data of California State University's students, faculty, and staff is among our highest priorities. CSU has security measures in place to reduce the likelihood of cyber incidents, but should one occur, immediate action is taken to reduce further exposure.
Often involved in cutting-edge research, universities are prime targets for Chinese state-sponsored threat activity groups to acquire valuable research data and intellectual property.
