Mary Marshall, a 63-year-old woman, drowned on the Kings River after her dog jumped in, pulling her into a dangerous strainer from which they couldn’t escape.
The strainer caused by a large object blocking the river led to their tragic drowning—strainers are known for trapping people underwater as water surges past.
Rescue teams found Marshall and her dog submerged two hours after a 911 call was made; they had to cut the leash to retrieve them.
Marshall, a retired U.S. Marine Corps member, was celebrated by her daughter as a fierce protector and beloved figure in her family's life.
