On Sunday evening, Gardaí on patrol found an injured man on Oliver Plunkett Street but faced hostility from a large crowd when trying to assist.
As tensions escalated, additional Garda units were called, and 'pepper spray' was used in response to the increasingly aggressive public order incidents.
The confrontational situation resulted in two Gardaí being injured – one pushed to the ground and another punched, but both were able to continue their duties.
A total of 16 people were arrested for their violent behavior towards the Gardaí, with all expected to appear before the Cork District Court.
