The 51-year-old man died after he suffered serious injuries following an interaction with gardai. The man was involved in an incident with gardai close to the Holiday Inn on O'Connell Street last Friday. He died days later. Fiosru, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, said it is independently investigating the incident and has commenced a criminal investigation into it. It said the incident, which happened at around 4.15am, involved the serious harm of the man, who later died.
Shortly before 10am, gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident on Churchtown Road Upper, Dundrum. The on-duty Garda member was taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, a Garda spokesperson said.
A lack of sanctions for poor performance and the absence of effective management led to a culture to take root in roads policing units whereby some gardaí deliberately avoided traffic offences.
Following an extradition from the United Arab Emirates at the request of the Irish authorities, a male was arrested today, Thursday 29th May 2025, by Gardaí and is being brought before a sitting of the Special Criminal Court.
