Network Rail revealed that incidents involving HGVs colliding with bridges caused over 150,000 minutes of train delays in the UK last year, totaling around 100 days.
The railway bridge at Lower Downs Road in Wimbledon was hit 17 times last year, making it the joint second most bashed bridge nationwide, causing significant delays.
Despite 1,532 reported bridge strikes costing the rail industry about £20m in delays and repairs, there has been a 4% reduction in incidents over the last year.
Martin Frobisher of Network Rail emphasizes the importance of proper planning by lorry operators, urging them to know their vehicle heights and heed warning signs.
