More than 100 schools across Barnet to go smartphone-free
Briefly

Starting September, over 100 schools in Barnet will implement a smartphone ban for primary and secondary students to create an environment free of digital distractions. Supported by the Smartphone Free Childhood initiative, this policy aims to protect children's mental health amid rising concerns about the impact of smartphones and social media on young people. With approximately 63,000 state-educated children participating, the initiative encourages personal growth, social interaction, and hands-on learning experiences critical to their development. Local MP Dan Tomlinson emphasizes the need for a safer education environment, pledging collaboration with educators and parents on this initiative.
There is a lot of evidence to show there is a direct correlation and causative link between the use of smartphones and social media in young children and the rise in cases of depression, anxiety and self-harm.
The use of smartphones by schoolchildren is an unnecessary distraction from education and a huge risk to their mental health and wellbeing.
