James Blake has expressed strong support for Coldplay amidst recent criticisms, urging that the "bashing" of the band must stop as it has become outdated. During a discussion on the BBC podcast Sidetracked, Blake responded to remarks from singer Chrissie Hynde and comments from BRIT Awards host Jack Whitehall, defending Coldplay's artistic evolution and Chris Martin’s songwriting talent. Blake questioned the unwillingness to accept change in a band’s style and encouraged acknowledgment of Coldplay's significant contributions to music, while Chris Martin reflected on how public perception has affected the band.
Blake stated, "Coldplay bashing has got to stop. It's not cool anymore! There are so many amazing Coldplay songs. Chris Martin is clearly a melodic genius."
He emphasized, "When you go and see them at Glastonbury, did you like a lot of the songs? Probably. Are we not allowed to change the way we dress?"
Martin acknowledged, "Coldplay are a very, very easy, safe target... We should probably try and look a bit like this or talk a bit like that. And now, it's just like, 'No.'"
