British comedian Russell Brand faces multiple charges including rape and sexual assault, stemming from allegations made by four women regarding incidents between 1999 and 2005. The Metropolitan Police in London have confirmed the charges after an investigation following an exposé by media outlets. Brand, currently living in Florida with his family, released a video denying the allegations and portraying himself as once foolish but never engaged in rape. He expressed distrust in the British government and relayed his intention to defend himself in a court appearance scheduled for May 2.
Brand quickly denied all charges, sharing a video statement on his X account, in which he insisted that he has "never engaged in non-consensual activity," while conceding that he had acted like "a fool" when he was "young and single."
Brand went on to attack the British government, saying that he has "no trust" in it, while claiming that the "law has become a kind of weapon."
He added that he is "grateful" he will now have the opportunity to defend himself against the accusations in court.
The alleged offenses are understood to involve four women and took place between 1999 and 2005. Police have already interviewed Brand about the allegations.
