Parents of four British teens have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against TikTok, claiming their children died in 2022 while participating in the social media blackout challenge. The lawsuit, initiated by the Social Media Victims Law Center, accuses TikTok of using a targeting algorithm that exposes vulnerable minors to dangerous content to increase platform engagement. While TikTok claims to block harmful content, the parents argue that the platform misleads users about safety, presenting itself as secure for children despite driving them towards deadly challenges.
Matthew Bergman, the founding attorney of the Social Media Victims Law Center, stated: "...TikTok's algorithm purposely targeted these children with dangerous content to increase their engagement time on the platform and drive revenue."
The parents of four British teenagers are suing TikTok over deaths they claim were caused by the viral blackout challenge, which gained popularity on social media.
TikTok asserts that it has blocked searches related to the blackout challenge since 2020 and aims to prohibit dangerous content.
The lawsuit alleges TikTok presents itself as a safe platform for children while promoting addictive and harmful content that leads to tragic outcomes.
