Remembering Victoria Merl, founder of ad agency, lover of Tinkerbell
"She started out as an actor, singer and dancer, later went into the advertising industry, then did what many women did back then married and became a wife and mother. Later she divorced and started to truly find her voice. Divorce was not the norm back then but she went back to work and carved out a career. She turned her living room into a dance studio"
"Later she lied on her resume about her work experience, got a media buyer job in advertising and studied every evening with a friend and colleague who taught her the ropes of the industry. She worked at the top agencies in New York as a media buyer, for such clients such as Lipton, KFC and Blue Nun. She was promoted often and eventually had a managerial level position."
Victoria Keppler Merl was born Mary Jane Keppler on Aug. 24, 1933, in New York City to Victor Keppler and Josephine. Her name became Vicktoria (Vicki) Salonites, then Riker, then Merl. She began as an actor, singer and dancer before entering advertising. She married and had daughters, later divorced, returned to work and opened a ballet school in her living room to support her family. She became a media buyer, worked for major New York agencies with clients including Lipton, KFC and Blue Nun, rose to managerial roles and founded VRM Media Services in Palm Beach Gardens. She married Judson Merl, lived in Palm Beach, loved Disney and animals—especially cats—and retired in Berkeley. She died Jan. 15, 2025.
