Precursors of exhausted T cells are preemptively formed in acute infection
Briefly

Our research reveals that T cell exhaustion, traditionally associated with chronic infections, can also manifest early during acute infections, challenging the long-held belief that it only occurs under prolonged antigen exposure.
The findings indicate that the early developing TCF1+ precursor populations exhibit significant diversity, consisting of cells that can evolve into either effective memory T cells or cells that show characteristics of exhausted T cells typically seen in chronic conditions.
