Blumenthal: 'I thought the TV was talking to me'
Briefly

TV chef Heston Blumenthal shared his experience with bipolar disorder, describing how being sectioned was ultimately beneficial for his mental health. Diagnosed in 2023, Blumenthal recalled vivid hallucinations and episodes that impacted his life significantly. Now, as an ambassador for Bipolar UK, he speaks candidly about the struggles, including understanding his diagnosis and the challenges faced by his supportive wife, Melanie Ceysson. Blumenthal aims to raise awareness about bipolar disorder and its effects, emphasizing the importance of treatment and support.
This wasn't all the time, but it was getting greater and greater, and being sectioned was the best thing that could happen to me.
I laughed out loud after receiving a message from a woman who told me that during a manic episode she thought the TV was talking to her.
She had to decide how I would take it [being sectioned] and ... my response was, I embraced it, but I never thought I was going to be diagnosed as being bipolar.
The highs and the lows were normal, but they weren't right for me, and they weren't right for the people around me that cared for me.
