Caltrain's Chief Safety Officer, Mike Meader, is spearheading initiatives to reduce fatalities on the tracks, which have risen significantly in recent years. Plans include more police presence, surveillance cameras, and creative deterrents, such as calming blue lights and pyramids on platforms. To address the mental health aspect, over 700 signs for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline will be displayed. While efforts are ongoing, board members emphasize that many fatalities are due to suicides, highlighting the need for a respectful approach in their safety plan, which centers around engineering, enforcement, and education.
"Obviously the people who are caught on the track or who access the track intentionally are trespassing, but I don't think that's the most notable thing about them. They often meet an untimely death."
"We should be honest - it's suicides," said Adrian Brandt, a member of Caltrain's Citizens Advisory Committee.
Caltrain will put up over 700 signs advertising the nationwide 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Meader said he's following the 'three E's of rail safety' - engineering, enforcement and education.
