"I think they really felt hopeless and helpless when they heard of my diagnosis. I think there are so many parents of autistic kids, kids with ADHD, social anxiety, or bullying at school. They feel really alone, and they are not."
"When I was diagnosed, my parents asked, 'Is there anything we can do? ANYTHING? And this is to give them hope that there is a lot they can do."
Leland Vittert is a journalist and television host who lives with autism. He experienced severe bullying and social isolation during childhood despite extraordinary achievements, including flying a plane before age 12. An evaluation revealed a nearly 70-point gap between performance and verbal IQ scores and noted 'social blindness' and a pervasive developmental disorder on the autism spectrum. His parents kept the diagnosis private and refused professional advice that amounted to doing nothing, instead taking active steps to support his development. Leland later wrote Born Lucky: A Dedicated Father, A Grateful Son and My Journey with Autism and encourages neurodivergent youth.
