A landmark California trial alleges Instagram and YouTube intentionally designed products to addict young users and cause mental harm. The plaintiff, a 20-year-old woman, says she began using YouTube at age six and Instagram at nine and experienced depressive episodes and suicidal thoughts, with Instagram use reportedly reaching up to 16 hours a day.
