In Miami-Dade County, bus operators are not allowed to carry firearms to ensure the safety of passengers and staff, despite rising concerns about violence. Following a recent tragic incident where a bus driver shot two passengers after a dispute, the policies concerning armed transit operators are under scrutiny. The county's Department of Transportation and Public Works reiterated its stance against allowing operators to be armed. The shooting incident occurred on a popular bus route, drawing attention and concern from both the public and transit union leaders regarding operator safety.
Transit operators are not allowed to be armed," said Juan Mendieta, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade's Department of Transportation and Public Works.
The incident appeared to involve Miami-Dade's No. 77 bus, which runs all night between Miami Gardens and the Government Center transit station.
