As billions of people around the world prepare for New Year's Eve, waiting for fireworks to light up the sky, this billion-dollar business will again bring a huge profit to Chinese companies. The country, which is the world's leading exporter of pretty much anything, is also the number one fireworks producer, outpacing competitors by a large margin.
According to Statista and the UN Comtrade data, Chinese companies shipped more than 363,000 metric tons of fireworks across the world last year, equivalent to 121,000 fully loaded Boeing 747 airplanes or 60,500 cars. This huge figure is even more impressive when compared to the fireworks shipments of other countries.
For instance, the world's second-largest producer, the Netherlands, shipped around 20,000 tons of fireworks last year, or 18 times less than the leading China. Far below, Germany ranked third with over 8,400 tons in fireworks shipments.
Statistics show these five countries have produced and shipped ten times less pyrotechnics overseas than China alone.
