"This free-trade agreement would be liberating for the German economy. It's almost impossible to imagine a more difficult situation geopolitically, we have to use this opportunity," said Volker Treier, the foreign policy leader of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He emphasized the necessity of finalizing the deal after 25 years of negotiations, suggesting that the current geopolitical climate presents a unique chance that should not be missed.
Faced with looming US protectionism under the incoming Trump administration, Treier remarked that the EU-Mercosur agreement is critical for signaling strength to EU and German businesses. He noted how collaboration with South American nations could advance Europe's renewable energy goals more quickly and sustainably, particularly in sectors like batteries and green hydrogen.
Treier also highlighted that European businesses currently endure significant tariffs when exporting to Mercosur countries, stating, "European businesses would no longer pay 4 billion ($4.2 billion) in tariffs to export their goods to Mercosur countries." He further pointed out that high tariffs imposed by Mercosur have stifled growth in trade relations, stressing the importance of the impending agreement.
