Callous hit-and-run U-Haul driver arrested months after killing pedestrian left a trove of stolen credit cards behind: prosecutors

Jamie Ferreira, 37, has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of pedestrian David Opiela. Prosecutors allege Ferreira drove recklessly, fleeing the scene with stolen items from a U-Haul, including credit cards and personal information of victims. The investigation linked her to other crimes, including burglary using a forged postal service key. Her DNA was found on the airbag, leading to her capture with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies.

The defendant fled the vehicle with her passenger Jennifer Sablan, and the contents of the U-Haul truck revealed that the duo were involved in other crimes, including identity theft.

Investigators also found four notebooks containing financial details including names, addresses and Social Security numbers of Elmhurst residents, who were allegedly the victims of a burglary committed by Ferreira months earlier.
