A house fire in Chicopee led to the tragic deaths of two residents, believed to have been caused by smoking materials. The Chicopee Fire Department responded to the call early Saturday morning, finding flames engulfing the two-story home. Investigations revealed no working smoke alarms present, underscoring the dangers posed by smoking indoors, particularly for older adults. Fire Chief Daniel Stamborski highlighted the need for caution while smoking, especially in homes with medical oxygen. This incident raises awareness regarding fire safety measures that could prevent such tragedies.
On behalf of the Chicopee Fire Department, I again want to offer our heartfelt condolences to the victims' family and loved ones... I also want to remind all our residents that smoking materials are the leading cause of fatal fires in Massachusetts and the nation, especially among older adults.
After fighting the fire for more than an hour, firefighters found two people inside the home who were both pronounced dead at the scene. Both victims were in their late 60s and were the only occupants of the home.
Officials believe that the fire started accidentally from smoking materials in the first-floor living room, with no working smoke alarms found in the home.
Tragically, working smoke alarms were found at less than half of last year's fatal fires, underscoring the critical need for safety measures in households.
