Deborah Burns, a consultant paediatrician, expressed feeling betrayed by Homerton Hospital after her son William died from sepsis following a failure to administer antibiotics promptly. Despite her attempts to communicate the urgency of his condition, including raising concerns multiple times, miscommunication led to a critical delay in treatment. The inquest revealed that medical staff did not acknowledge her concerns, resulting in a devastating outcome. Dr. Burns highlighted issues with monitoring and care throughout William's treatment, asserting that his care was insufficient both in the emergency ward and the intensive care unit, ultimately contributing to his preventable death.
It is impossible for words to describe adequately the pain of this immense loss and the feelings of betrayal that I feel about William's death and the aftermath.
I believe that these were only given when they were because I was there. I raised concern about the lack of antibiotics eight times before they were administered.
From my direct experience as a witness... I believe he was left unmonitored and untreated in [resuscitation] for far too long.
I believe his care was no better on the intensive care unit until it was too late.
