Driver arrested in Upper East Side collision that killed 78-year-old woman: cops

On June 13, 2023, Darrell Lopez struck 78-year-old Virginia Renta as she attempted to cross East 93rd Street. Lopez was arrested months later for failure to yield and due care.
Lopez remained at the scene as officers arrived, but it took the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad more than six months to investigate before making an arrest.
From January to December 2024, there were 120 pedestrian fatalities citywide, along with 25 cyclist and 114 motorist deaths, totaling 164 traffic fatalities.
