A 25-year-old police officer was struck and killed after she stopped to help a motorist in an overturned vehicle on a San Diego freeway on Monday night, authorities said. La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven was on her way back to La Mesa from a jail around 10:30 p.m. when she came across the vehicle on Interstate 8 and stopped to assist, according to a statement from police. After exiting her vehicle to help, she was hit by another driver.

Police say a box truck heading north on 8th Avenue hit a parked van, causing it to go onto the sidewalk. The vehicle struck a building as a result, according to the FDNY. A 46-year-old BMW driver died early Sunday after he slammed into a support pillar underneath elevated subway tracks in the Bronx, police said. An 89-year-old woman died after being struck by a car in Coney Island, Brooklyn, on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred near West 22nd Street and Neptune Avenue when a driver, believed to have suffered a medical episode, backed into three women on the sidewalk. The elderly woman was taken to NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn, where she succumbed to her injuries.

SKY7 was over the scene, and emergency crews investigated the incident and worked to clear the scene. One car could be seen wrapped around a light pole, while another was further down the road with front-end damage.
