A group led by Elon Musk has made a $97.6 billion bid to acquire OpenAI, highlighting ongoing tensions between Musk and co-founder Sam Altman, who aims to take the organization private. Musk's rationale for the bid is to revert OpenAI to its original open-source and safety-focused mission. His own AI venture, xAI, is involved in the bid, raising the possibility of a merger. Altman humorously dismissed the offer on social media, referencing Musk's prior purchase of Twitter at a much higher price.
"It's time for OpenAI to return to the open source, safety-focused force for good it once was," Musk told The Journal, by way of Toberoff. "We will make sure that happens."
Altman has - fittingly - responded to the offer via a cheeky X post, writing, "[N]o thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want." Musk famously purchased Twitter for $44 billion in 2022.
