Facebook, Threads, WhatsApp, Instagram stumble in outage
Briefly

Meta is currently facing significant downtime across its major platforms, with users experiencing varying degrees of access issues to Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads, and Instagram. Downtime started at around 0900 PT (1700 UTC), leading to complaints flooding Downdetector and disruptions reported globally across Europe, the US, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company acknowledged the technical issues affecting access and is working to restore normal services.
Despite the major disruption, some users were still able to access the apps normally, highlighting the unpredictable nature of large distributed systems. It's evident that not everyone is experiencing the same level of connectivity issues, as users sitting side by side in offices were reporting different outcomes on their devices.
Meta's status page outlined that all of its services were experiencing major disruptions, with the exception of ad transparency tools, which faced only 'some' issues. This particular outage is notably the second occurrence in 2024, mirroring a previous incident in March that also caused widespread discontent and speculation among users.
In a statement on X, Meta admitted the ongoing technical issues impacting users, expressing efforts to resolve the problems as quickly as possible, and issued an apology for the inconvenience caused. These outages not only affect user satisfaction but also raise questions regarding the reliability of such a vast network of interconnected services.
