The Box Shop, a key artistic hub in Hunters Point, San Francisco, has successfully found a new permanent home miles away after facing eviction due to local development projects. Founded by artist Charles Gadeken about 20 years ago, the Box Shop has served as a prolific space for the creation of notable art installations, notably the Flaming Lotus Girls. With the lease expiration approaching, Gadeken spearheaded efforts to find a new location, ultimately purchasing property at 1265 Van Dyke to ensure the continuation of this artistic enclave amidst changing urban landscapes.
It’s called the Box Shop because all of the separate artists' tools and materials are stored in giant stacked shipping containers.
We are losing our lease here in Hunters Point, Gadeken told SFist in November 2023.
The Box Shop just announced they've found a new studio to relocate to, this time buying the place outright, at a new location just one mile southwest in Hunters Point.
We have incredible news to share, the Box Shop said in a Thursday, February 13 email announcement.
