While my PE class flashbacks weren't encouraging, I decided to give it a shot and I'm so glad I did. From the moment we stepped into Boulebar's classy entrance, we were transported. Directed downstairs into the basement, it felt as though we'd been whisked away to a charming French garden. A lively atmosphere of laughter and clinking glasses welcomed us. It was relaxed yet bustling, an ideal setting for trying something new.
Our petanque adventure began with a warm introduction from the staff, who kindly explained the rules in a way even a completely clueless individual like me could grasp. Essentially, players take turns throwing small metal balls as close as possible to a target ball, called the cochonnet. It's all about strategy, precision, and maybe a touch of luck. At first, it seemed straightforward, but, like so many things, it's trickier than it appears.
Boulebar offers the perfect menu for pausing and recharging during the game. A spread of cheeses, bread, and jam made for an ideal light snack, followed by an impressive seafood platter featuring oysters, lobster, prawns, and salmon. Each bite was fresh and flavourful and not enough to make you stop the game altogether.
For a while, it looked like I might win—I was leading 10-8 before the final round. But in a nail-biting finish, my sister triumphed again, reaching 13 points first - I'm still convinced she bent the rules somehow, though she insists that wasn’t the case.
