The Monterey County Board of Supervisors unanimously proclaimed a local emergency following a fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant on January 16, which burned lithium batteries. The incident prompted evacuation of 1,200 residents and road closures. Officials provided updates on emergency responses, emphasizing the effective management of the situation despite air quality concerns. The Environmental Protection Agency confirmed no hazardous fumes were released, and county officials reassured the public about air safety, attributing current moderate air quality levels to seasonal wood fires.
It is extremely important to highlight how efficient and effective the response was from start to finish; this timeline demonstrates a very aggressive and conservative approach to protecting health and safety.
We remain fairly confident that there was no adverse impact associated with emissions from the plant fire; we did not do speciation of chemicals found because that would be a pretty exhaustive and expensive process to do.
