Mark Molloy, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at age 35, reflects on his challenging journey through treatment and its impact on his mental health. Initially unaware of the disease, he experienced significant physical and emotional tolls, especially during personal milestones, such as missing his brother's wedding. Support from family, a partner, and an Irish Cancer Society mental health nurse played crucial roles in his recovery. Currently undergoing maintenance chemotherapy that concludes in April, Molloy expresses hope now that he sees "light at the end of the tunnel."
Initially, I didn't even know what leukaemia was, and I couldn't believe that I was 35 years of age and had been diagnosed with cancer.
Before I got diagnosed, I was outgoing, social, I played lots of sport... all of a sudden I was up in bed in level seven of a hospital.
I had to go straight from the wedding back to the hospital. I remember being in the car... 'Why is this happening to me?'
As time went on, I started to see light at the end of the tunnel.
