Egg prices are increasing significantly due to an outbreak of avian flu in the US, which has resulted in fewer egg-laying hens and reduced production. This scenario is detrimental for many GLP-1 medication users, like those taking Ozempic and Wegovy, who depend on eggs as a healthy protein source. These medications lead to reduced appetites, meaning users often turn to healthier options, primarily eggs, even as prices climb and availability wanes. A recent report indicates that nearly half of GLP-1 users spend less on food after starting treatment, but they still face challenges in obtaining affordable eggs.
Eggs are a logical protein option for people taking Ozempic, Wegovy, or similar medications, as they naturally contain little fat, salt, or sugar.
Many users - 49% - said in December that their households spent less on food after they started taking the drug, according to a survey.
The disease has led farms to cull their flocks and cut back production, resulting in 8% fewer egg-laying hens than three years ago.
Prices have spiked recently; as of January 30 the cost of a dozen Midwest large eggs was $7.08, according to the US Department.
