Union representatives and the city of Philadelphia agreed to a deal ending a weeklong strike by nearly 10,000 blue-collar workers from District Council 33. The strike began on July 1 while workers sought better pay and benefits. The agreement includes a new three-year contract expected to increase pay by 14 percent over four years. Mayor Cherelle Parker announced the end of the strike on social media, confirming that certain essential workers had been ordered back to work during the strike.
"The work stoppage involving the District Council 33 and the City of Philadelphia is OVER," Mayor Cherelle Parker announced. "We have reached a tentative agreement with District Council 33."
"We did the best we could with the circumstances we had in front of us," stated Union President Greg Boulware after the deal was reached.
