SFMTA Reverses, Backs Off From Issuing Tickets for 'Daylighting' Parking Violations
Briefly

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has shelved plans to issue $40 parking tickets for unmarked curb violations tied to the crosswalk 'daylighting' law. This law, designed to enhance pedestrian visibility, mandates a 20-foot clearance from crosswalks but lacks penalties for violations. Due to public feedback and inadequate budget for red curb markings, SFMTA has opted to issue warnings instead of citations while continuing to paint curbs. SFMTA's Acting Director emphasized safety over fines, indicating a shift in focus towards community engagement and roadway safety.
Our highest priority is keeping people safe not issuing citations. Since I became the Acting Director of Transportation at the SFMTA, I have made it a priority to listen to community members.
The SFMTA was planning to begin issuing parking tickets on March 1, dinging drivers $40 if they park in an unmarked daylighting zone and $108 if they park in a red-painted one.
