Torstar Corp., the parent company of the Toronto Star, is suing Meta Platforms for allegedly terminating a contract to pay millions for distributing its digital news content. The agreement was established in 2021, but Meta claimed it would terminate it citing adverse impacts from Canada's Online News Act, which requires large tech firms to financially compensate Canadian media. Torstar seeks to recover $1.6 million plus interest, arguing that the new law does not justify termination. Meta has stopped payments since the act became effective in December 2023 and has blocked access to Canadian news outlets on its platforms.
"Meta had already accepted that Torstar's digital news, alone, was worth millions of dollars."
"The act merely obliged Meta to pay a fair rate for Canadian digital news."
